WAN/LAN Modelling

Assume Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) ATM links for WAN
- Total switch rate shared between Virtual Circuits
Assume full ATM rate for each LAN link
- So all processors at an institute enjoy full ATM rate
- Required disk I/O rate at institute is aggregate “ATM” rate
- Depending on its size, we can say whether what is needed is
  - backplane
  - HiPPI
  - FDDI
  - Ethernet
  - etc.
